About Us

Safer Waves was set up in 2019 to provide support to merchant seafarers who have experienced sexual assault, sexual harassment or gender discrimination on board.

These experiences can be hard to talk about, even within the supportive environment provided by existing seafarer welfare and support organisations.  While we have made progress in discussing bullying and harassment within the Merchant Navy, it remains difficult to find a safe space to talk about assault and rape.

At Safer Waves we aim to create that safe space by providing information and emotional support to seafarers. When appropriate we signpost to other suitable welfare charities globally and locally.  We are working with seafarers, employers and organisations to build a network of support.

Job Purpose

At Safer Waves we are on an exciting journey to grow our organisation and our operational resilience. As we grow there is a huge opportunity to develop our systems, tools and operational processes to best support our team.

This is a crucial role at the heart of the organisation. You will be responsible for supporting our CEO in delivering our charity strategy and coordinating all aspects of operations, HR, finance, digital platforms and compliance.

We are a growing organisation, and this is a unique opportunity to grow and innovate with the organisation and to contribute to our future success. If you have a strong ‘can-do’ attitude, great project management and organisational skills, can work independently, and thrive with a varied workload – then this role is for you.

Responsibilities & Accountabilities

  • Work closely with the CEO to deliver the charity’s strategy over the next three years whilst also ensuring the day-to-day running of the charity remains effective and compliant.
  • Ensure that grant and donor management processes are effectively administered.
  • Supporting the delivery of our confidential and anonymous email service by ensuring our volunteer pool is sufficient and trained whilst also addressing any IT issues that may arise.
  • Operational improvement: Taking the lead on developing and improving processes and systems across the organisation to ensure we run smoothly and efficiently.Provide general project management support and advice for a small number of projects and programmes.
  • Communications and Outreach: Working with the CEO and Trustees to raise the profile of the charity and increase the number of seafarers reached.
