Have Your Say

Thank you for taking the time to take part in this short survey, please ensure you read the following information before deciding to take part.

This survey has been created by Safer Waves, an organisation set up to provide support to merchant seafarers who have experienced sexual harassment, sexual assault or rape at sea. (For more details see About Us).

The purpose of the survey is to gather information that will help us understand the needs of seafarers, and how best to develop support services.

We invite all seafarers (past and present) to take part in the survey, whether or not they have personally suffered from sexual harassment, discrimination based on gender, or sexual assault.

Due to the nature of the topic, completing this survey may bring back distressing feelings or memories for participants, please only complete the survey if you feel able.

The survey takes approximately 3 to 5 minutes to complete and consists of up to 12 questions. The third question will ask you specifically whether you have experienced sexual harassment or assault, if you would prefer not to answer, you can select ‘prefer not to say’. The next couple of questions will ask you about the support that was available to you, and the remainder of the questions are more general in nature.  If at any time you feel distressed by the questions, you are under no obligation to continue.

If you do experience distress while taking part, please see our Resources page for organisations that may be able to help.

The survey is completely anonymous, if leaving comments please do not write anything which might identify you eg. ship names, your own name, company names.  If at any time you would like to withdraw comments that you have made, please contact us and the comment will be removed with full regard to confidentiality.

The data collected will be used to build a picture of the support that is available to merchant seafarers, what is lacking and how we can improve on the current situation. The raw data will be stored online using Qualtrics, a secure surveying database and will only be available to the founder and future trustees. Statistics drawn from the data will be made available to the public, but data will be handled sensitively at all times, with the utmost importance being placed on the anonymity and well-being of our participants. By submitting your responses you are agreeing that your data can be handled in this way.

This information is repeated at the start of the survey.
