Over the last year, Safer Waves has built on the successes of 2023, becoming an important part of the UK maritime welfare network and presenting regularly at leading industry events. Here’s a taster of what’s been going on:
New year New look
More volunteers join Safer Waves
Several new volunteers joined the charity in October, taking part in our bespoke training including a further series of informative training sessions before trying out their newly gained skills in a sandpit session led by Safer Waves staff. With a variety of backgrounds, the new volunteers are ready to respond to emails to the service.
Safer Waves deliver presentations at maritime events
Reflecting Safer Waves’ growing role in the UK maritime welfare network, the charity has delivered presentations at numerous industry events.
Firstly, the Seafarers Charity and the Nautical Institute hosted a Psychological Safety at Sea webinar in celebration of International Day for Women in Maritime. Safer Waves were part of an expert panel that discussed what a safe workspace means, how to recognise and manage unacceptable behaviours and the support and resources available to champion women’s health, wellbeing and success.
Safer Waves also participated in a Royal Navy/Maritime UK event at Portsmouth Dockyard, informing those present about the charity and its role in the industry.
After becoming a constituent member of the Merchant Navy Welfare Board late last year, Safer Waves attended their September Conference, where the charity presented its mission to attendants.
Following our collaboration with ISWAN on the Allyship at Sea campaign, Safer Waves conducted an active bystander training session at an event in October, hosted by ISWAN, The Seafarers Charity, and the UK P&I Club. An ally guidance document
originating from this campaign can be found on the ISWAN website.
Safer Waves delivers training to cadets
This year, Safer Waves has been busy connecting with cadets at maritime colleges, raising awareness about our services and providing essential training. Nearly 300 cadets from two colleges participated in our active bystander training, equipping them with the skills to promote safer and more inclusive environments as they embark on their careers.
Safer Waves Responder Training
Following the success of two responder courses delivered in January and June of this year, there is the opportunity to book onto Safer Waves’ January Responder Course. Run in partnership with Rape Crisis South London, this training enables seafarers and shore staff around the world to develop the skills necessary to respond to survivors of sexual violence. Spotlight On: Zambezi River Challenge
In September 2025, Gordon Foot will embark on an extraordinary 10-day expedition to support both Safer Waves and The Sailors’ Society. His journey will involve canoeing 100km along the Zambezi River, culminating in a daring encounter with the "Terminator" rapids in the Batoka Gorge. Gordon aims to raise £20,000 for these two vital charities.
Thank you, Gordon, for your incredible dedication!
